Abstract
The new context of post-trade liberalization of the national economy in the 90s shows
the need for industries located in the Brazilian states increase continuously their com-
petitiveness, especially those firms situated in geographical areas with low socioeco-
nomic development. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to evaluate the main determinants
of growth in market share of industrial output in a regionalized perspective, based on
the ideas summarized in the replicator dynamics equation used in the evolutionary ap-
proach in economics, in order to analyze, specially, the role of the efficiency of techno-
logical innovation effort in the process. For this, we use the database of Pesquisa de
Inovação Tecnológica (Pintec) (2000, 2003, 2005 and 2008), Data Envelopment Analy-
sis (DEA) with Super-efficiency and Panel Data econometrics. The results on efficiency
of innovative efforts indicate intertemporally that the industries located in places con-
sidered inefficient should reallocate domestic spending on R&D for the acquisition of
knowledge outside the firm to enhance the performance impact of innovations. Finally,
the efficiency of spending on innovation, with a lag of one period, shows a positive and
statistically significant with the growth of regional market share.
